Along the Leland River, on Michigan's northwestern shores, you will find the delightful, small fishing village of Fishtown. A walking dock of boutiques, smokehouses, and charter boats like the Joy, attracts tourists to this small community every summer. Recently renovated, the 'fishing shanties' or boutiques of Fishtown were lifted from their footings and refurbished. Some feel it has lost some charm as it now is more commercial.
My paintings of Fishtown I and Fishtown II were taken from photo references before the restoration. First inhabited by Native Americans who also fished this site, Fishtown is one of the last working fishing districts of the Great Lakes. A great stop on the way to Manitou Island. The town of Leland which lies just along the shore of the Sleeping Bear Dunes, offers waterfront restaurants, along with several art galleries, and lays claim to this historic attraction.
